Hilinqwo recognizes that meanings may exist in binary opposition. Hilinqwo supports the following dualities:

* Positive versus negative
* Dative versus ablative
* Incremental versus decremental

Meanings may divide a linear continuum.

* Examples: Temperature, time before/after a particular reference point.

Meanings may divide up a non-linear semantic space— e.g. color, social classes, directions, parts of the body, geographical features.

* A word may carve out a space for itself in opposition to other words.
* Two terms may be similar in meaning, but the boundary may vary.
* What attributes or components of an object are worth identifying with specialized terms?

Meanings can be organized into hierarchies.

Hilinqwo recognizes the hierarchy of biology and allows for distinct bases for each species, genus, etc.
